Remembering Bollywood Singer KK

Krishnakumar Kunnath (later lovingly called K.K.) after finishing his graduation from Kirori Mal college briefly worked as a marketing executive for a brief period of six months. Thereafter he chose to pursue his passion for singing. Initially, he struggled to create a name in the competitive music industry and the rest of the world is a witness.

Before breaking into the Bollywood industry K.K sang 3,500 jingles. Later he began knocking on the doors of music composers in the 1990s. Remembering K.K, musician Lesle Lewis, “KK came to me and asked whether I can make an album for him. Not everyone could make an album back then. You had to get signed by a record label, fund a video, and had to have some kind of a name. I told him that it is a long shot and that he will have to wait. But, since he was talented, I started calling him for jingles. Finally, after some years, I took some of his jingles to Sony Music and asked them to listen to this great upcoming singer. They loved his voice and asked me to make an album with him.”

Though being from South India K.K adapted well to the language that he sang in. Even when he sang the Tamil songs dappankuthu song ‘Appadi Podu’ none could make out that it was sung by a non-Tamilian.
